BBC Radio 4 is sparking a brand new debate relating to terms and gender.
According to sources, listeners called out the radio station when it referred to fishermen as ‘fisherpeople.’ Moreover, there were quite a few enraged individuals who claimed that it wasn’t fair to make such a public claim. And that’s especially true when women only comprise a fraction of the real job.
Those who tuned into the famous Radio 4 today program yesterday got a rude awakening when star European editor, named Katya Adler, made extra efforts to apply a gender natural description. While the topic of discussion revolved around Brexit talks, the editor brought on the sudden debate with the term.
Critics pointed out how the talk show host had no idea about what she was actually talking about. They went on to claim that the majority of workers employed in the fishing industry are in fact ‘overwhelming males.’
Moreover, they quoted a recent study that clearly demonstrated how women made up only 2.7 percent of the fishing industry.
On the other hand, famed ‘female fisherman,’ Ashley Mullenger joined in on the shocking debate too. Moreover, she confirmed her thoughts by expressing how she only knew of 6 other females that actually worked in the fishing business. For that reason, she felt the need to join the entire backlash that surrounds the BBC 4 radio incident.
In other news, the corporation’s style guide suggested how it was important to make the distinction unless and until you’re sure that industry belongs entirely to men. Hence, terms such as businessmen, fishermen, policemen, and newsmen need to be avoided at all costs, they claimed.
Recently, a source for BBC told MailOnline how Fisherpeople is actually a very acceptable term. However, they also claimed that there is no ban on the word fisherman too.
Whatever the case may be, the show is getting plenty of criticism for being ‘too woke.’ Despite the head trying to dismiss such claims, it looks like it’s going to take some time for listeners to forget about this bizarre incident that was aired recently.
