Bruce Springsteen was arrested for driving while intoxicated and reckless driving at a national recreation area in his native New Jersey.
On November 14, the iconic singer-songwriter received three citations – DWI, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area at Sandy Hook, in the Gateway National Recreation Area at the northeast tip of Monmouth County.
On Wednesday, Gateway spokesperson Brenda Ling said in a statement, “Springsteen was cooperative throughout the process.”
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Freehold native and Colts Neck resident, is scheduled to appear in a New Jersey court sometime within the next few weeks.
The news comes just days after the musician starred in a Super Bowl ad for Jeep that called on Americans to reunite and “meet in the middle” after a divisive year.
The 2-minute ad featured him in an unspecified location as he offer his patriotic vision and a message of hope.
“Now, fear has never been the best of who we are and as for freedom, it’s not the property of just the fortunate few. It belongs to us all. Whoever you are, wherever you’re from, it’s what connects us and we need that connection. We need the middle. We just have to remember the very soil we stand on is common ground,” he said.
Springsteen’s representative declined to comment on the matter, and records show that he had no other known history of run-ins with the law involving alcohol.
In his 2016 autobiography Born To Run, Springsteen revealed that he avoided alcohol as a young man, and only had his first drink at the age of 22.
“My experience with my father had been enough,” he wrote, referencing his father, Douglas Springsteen, and his struggles with alcoholism.
“The terrifying, all-engulfing presence he became when he drank convinced me to never go there. He lost who he was.”
