A dad has been lambasted online after forcing his own daughter to do household chores in exchange for sanitary pads.
The widowed dad, 50, explained that he had lost his wife ten years ago, and ever since he had been raising his 17-year-old son and 15-years-old daughter alone.
However, he has really upset people up after admitting that he forces his daughter to do household chores in return for sanitary pads while his son doesn’t do any chores at all.
The anonymous man used Reddit to ask whether he was an idiot for asking his teen daughter to do housework while his son does not have to do anything.
“Recently it caused a big stink with some family that my daughter does chores, but my son does not,” he said. “I explained it’s because I have to spend extra on my daughter each month not only for her extracurriculars but for her monthly supplies, so it‘s my way of having her pay me back.”
“She cleans the shared living spaces and bathrooms in our apartment and cooks four meals a week.”
The father justifies that he spends twice as much on his son’s extracurricular activities but it will help his son get into college while the extra he spends on his daughter was just his teen daughter’s hobbies.
“I feel this could help him get into college but hers were just a hobby in my opinion,” he said. “(My daughter) overheard me say this and was very upset.”
“She started refusing to do chores because it isn’t fair,” he continued. “I told her she’d still be doing her chores and life isn’t fair so stop being a brat, or I’d refuse to pay for her extracurricular stuff or pads.”
“I wouldn’t actually do that, but I was mad when I said it,” he explained.
Then he went on to explain that his daughter had since moved in with her aunt, who had said that he was being “abusive.”
“My brother and sister are coddling her and I’m furious,” he said. “I’m completely fed up with the whole thing. AITI (am I the idiot) for expecting her to do chores?” he asked.
Fellow Redditors were dismayed by the widowed dad’s story and agreed that he was indeed an idiot.
People have been reacting on the thread saying: “You make your daughter do chores because you have to pay for period supplies monthly…..which she literally cannot help? You’re an idiot in every way.”
“Withholding pads from a teenage girl as punishment? What?” a second one agreed.
“Both kids have extracurricular,” a third one stated. “Both kids cost you money. It just sounds like your playing favorites and devaluing your own daughter’s activities. Your daughter will learn to resent you.”
When the thread got into Facebook, users there were more outspoken in their criticism.
“I’d bleed on every piece of furniture in the house,” wrote one outraged woman.
