Elderly Couple Beat Coronavirus Together

An elderly couple walked out of hospital together after recovering undergoing COVID-19 treatment for three weeks.

Michael, 91, and Gillian England, 88, both whom were admitted at Leicester Royal Infirmary, have been married for 61 years.

Laura Lomas, a sister at the hospital said that Michael would get dressed every morning before the therapist teams arrived, and asks to pass by to his wife’s bedside to exercise.

Meanwhile, Gillian would ask the staff how her husband was, and once Richard arrives, the couple would then hold hands and have a cup of tea together.

The hospital staff also allowed the couple to order and eat their meals together during their “heart-warming journey” to support each other.

The inspirational pair continues their recovery at their city home after walking out of the hospital on Friday, and expresses their gratitude to the NHS staff for their care, compassion and hard work throughout their stay in hospital.

“I want to get better so I can look after my wife – first and foremost, I want to be there for Gillian,” Michael said after the couple were allowed to go home.

“While I’ve been in hospital I’ve not really missed anything because Gillian is here and I have been able to see her every day.”

“I am so grateful to all the staff who tried very hard to make sure we have been looked after on the same ward,“ he added.
