As the George Floyd protests gain momentum, the intense cries for more police reforms across the US are increasing.
Many police departments have held their officials accountable.
This has in turn resulted in a rapid increase in both firings as well as suspension of all those officials, accused of using excessive force against protesters in the country.
On the other hand, one particular Florida based police organization is standing out for doing just the opposite. The organization’s outspoken plea to re-hire any officers that were accused of assault is spreading outrage.
A rather impromptu message was posted by the Brevard County of Fraternal Order of the Police, late Saturday. It addressed the “Buffalo 57” as well as “Atlanta 6”, boldly exclaiming it’s the desire for “hiring.”
Here, “Buffalo 57” looks to refer in context to 57 of the police officers, who took part in a mass resignation, from their force’s competent emergency response squad. The step was taken after the suspension of two fellow police officials, guilty of pushing down a senior 75-year-old protesting citizen.
On the contrary, the “Atlanta 6” looks to refer to the six Atlanta based police officials, booked on multiple accounts. Five officers were found guilty of felony charges, after accusations poured in relating to the use of excessive force upon two black students.
The incident’s video recording was released, showcasing how the police officials broke into the college students’ window, pulling out the female student, while tasing her male acquaintance.
A total of 9 incidents regarding police misconduct or excessive use of force were caught on camera, in a timespan of just one week.
The Florida Police Organization’s posts have sparked great anger, with many explaining why the country’s police system deserves a defunding.
After the outrage, the Florida Police Organization ‘s President has apologized for now-deleted Facebook post inviting officers who had resigned or been fired during Black Lives Matter protests in Minneapolis, Buffalo, and Atlanta to join local police agency ranks.
He said, ‘I let my emotions and frustration get the better of me as a result of all the continually negative media portrayals of law enforcement’.
