10 SWAT Officers in Florida Quit the Unit Over ‘Political Heat’

10 officers of Hallandale Beach sent their resignation letter on Tuesday to Sonia Quinones, Hallandale Beach Chief Police, saying they feel they are subdued by the police and given minimal equipment with not enough training to face any kind of situation in the field.

According to the letter, the politicization of their tactics makes them feel even police dogs are given more security over team members. The officers resigned from the city’s SWAT team but they will continue to work for the police department.

These concerns were evoked as the police officers throughout the country are going through critical examination for their discriminatory behavior towards people of color. The country right now is witnessing unparalleled civil chaos after the death of a black man George Floyd at the hands of a White police cop who knelt on him for 8-minutes suffocating him to death.

The officers also stated their displeasure as one of the senior staff members took a knee alongside activists in #BlackLivesMatter demonstration to show solidarity with the Black community on Monday.

The letter read that until things are put into their correct place with regards to their duties and sentiments, they are no longer willing to put their families and themselves at such risk.

Greg Chavarria, the city’s manager, confirmed the members’ resignation and made it clear that these officers will continue to serve the Police Department.

He also spoke of the meeting, which is to be held on Monday, with all of the 10 officers to hear their concerns and collect their equipment. He also stated that the staff members who took a knee alongside activists have acted wrongly as they have ‘incorrectly stated the gesture.’

He also said the residents of the community should not feel fear and have doubts about the police department’s responsibilities as ensuring the citizens’ safety is still our priority.
