Fulton County Prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation intro former President Donald Trump for his “attempts to influence the administration of the 2020 Georgia general election”.
Fani Willis, a recently elected Democratic prosecutor in Fulton County, Georgia, requested numerous officials in state government to preserve documents related to Trump’s phone call last month.
During the phone call, which was made to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on January 2, Trump allegedly begged him to “find” enough votes to help him reverse his loss.
“All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state,” Trump told Raffensperger.
According to a state official with knowledge of the matter, the letter did not mention Trump by name, but it does pertain to his intervention in Georgia’s election.
“This investigation includes, but is not limited to, potential violations of Georgia law prohibiting the solicitation of election fraud, the making of false statements to state and local governmental bodies, conspiracy, racketeering, violation of oath of office and any involvement in violence or threats related to the election’s administration,” the prosecutor wrote.point 573 | 1
“This matter is of high priority, and I am confident that as fellow law enforcement officers sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States and Georgia, our acquisition of information and evidence of potential crimes via interviews, documents, videos and electronic records will be cooperative.”
A spokesperson for Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr’s office confirmed that the letter has been received and they are currently “in the process of reviewing and synthesizing the letter.”
The criminal probe comes as Trump faces a second impeachment trial in Washington this week, for his alleged role in inciting violence that resulted in a mob attacking the US Capitol on January 6.
