A German state has called for the banning of all forms of Islamic face coverings and burqas at schools.

Similarly, the state went on to claim how burqas and other full-face coverings went against the desire of a ‘free society.’

The ban was announced late Tuesday in the southwest German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Moreover, the state had previously banned teachers from using similar coverings and now the rule applies for students too.

The State’s Premier, Winfried Kretschmann went on to claim how it wasn’t common for many school girls to don burqas. However, he felt that a certain ban was needed to tackle exceptional cases.

The latest ban on full-face coverings and burqas is said to apply for all girls, currently attending both primary as well as secondary state schools in the region.

The state’s premier went on to add how such forms of coverings, usually worn by conservative members of the Muslim society, were against the norms of a free state. However, he did admit that banning such things at the university level isn’t so easy, terming it as a more ‘complex matter.’

Similarly, the country’s current CDU party has called for the full face-covering ban in schools, for a while now.

On the other hand, the country’s left-wing Green party is currently divided on the issue. But since the majority of leaders opted in favor of CDU, it was an inevitable decision by all means.

State party leaders, Sandra Detzer, alongside Oliver Hildenbrand were also called out for terming the full-face coverings and burqas as ‘symbols of oppression.’

With that being said, some members of the party have argued that such decisions could lead to an increase in tensions as well as negative impressions on current cultural integration.

This fear comes in light of a Hamburg court hearing where the decision for the ban on full-face coverings was overturned.
