Texas senator Ted Cruz’s wife, Heidi Cruz, reportedly talked to neighbors about their Cancún getaway, inviting them to escape the state’s freezing weather.
A series of leaked text messages revealed the hastily planned trip, and urged her friends to join them at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancún, where they had stayed “many times,” highlighting the room price ($309 per night) and its good security.
“Anyone can or want to leave for the week?” Heidi, who is the managing director at Goldman Sachs, wrote in a group text.
“We may go to Cancun there is a direct flights at 4:45pm and hotels w capacity.”
“Are you guys warm enough …. We have a fireplace! Let us know. Our house is FREEZING tho is why we stayed w ….. last night couldn’t stand it anymore,” she continued.
After photographs of the senator boarding his flight out of George HW Bush International Airport went viral, his staff defended on his behalf that it was a “long-planned trip.”
“The plan had been to stay through the weekend with the family,” the Republican lawmaker claims.
“On the one hand, all of us who are parents have a responsibility to take care of our kids, take care of our families. But I also have a responsibility that I take very seriously of fighting for the state of Texas.”
However, the recent text message reveal, as well as flight records, contradicts the senator’s claim that he was only chaperoning his young daughters to Mexico, noting that he was only trying “to be a good dad.”
Sources from United Airlines also confirmed that the senator was initially scheduled to return on Saturday, but changed his flight plans early Thursday morning.
“This is about as callous as any politician can get,” said Texas Democratic Party chairperson Gilberto Hinojosa, who was shocked but not surprised by the senator’s trip.
“He’s a politician that really has never cared much about anybody but himself.”
