28 Migrants Rescued at Mediterranean Sea Test Positive for Coronavirus


On Wednesday, the governor of Sicily, Nello Musumeci, reported on a Facebook post that 28 people from the recent immigrants from Libya to Italy have tested positive for coronavirus.

Italy has just controlled its peak hence, the government and the opposition are scared for the safety of public health. The governor has demanded a special sea-quarantine in a ferry for these individuals who’ve tested positive.

The opposition leaders, like Matteo Salvini, in Italy are criticizing the current government’s lenient policies for immigration and asylum in the wake of coronavirus. Matteo Salvini implemented hardcore migrant policy when he was the interior minister.

These 28 cases are the largest cluster of virus-positive migrants in the recent history who were held on a ship to Sicilian town of Porto Empedocle where they are to undergo quarantine now.

The German rescue group SeaWatch3, who is quite active in rescuing immigrants and asylum seekers stated that a few migrants previously have also undergone quarantine.

The ship’s crew, nonetheless, has tested negative and they assured SeaWatch of all the precautionary measures and SOP’s they are taking to prevent from getting it.
