The New York Police Department has informed cops regarding the state’s new marijuana law.
Local media outlets confirmed how citizens will now be allowed to smoke weed in public, provided that they are adults. Moreover, the NYPD took the time out to explain to cops how the law entails allowing adults to light up in public, preventing vehicle banning searches based upon the instincts of smell alone, and also ignoring any form of exchange of the drug, unless and until it centers around money.
The shocking 4-page long memo also goes as far as mentioning how law-enforcing authorities cannot approach, prevent, or detail any parolee who is smoking pot or has pot in their possession. And that includes cases where authorities are well aware of the ex-con who was not supposed to be getting high on drugs in the first place.
Instead, cops would now notify the relevant authorities involved in handling such parole individuals so as to enforce all of the conditions through which the detainee was actually sprung from prison, in the first place.
The shocking stance came into play as the state passed its legalizing weed law that had many citizens taken aback. Reports confirmed how this was a part of New York Governor Cuomo’s agenda for a while. And now, it has finally come into play.
The governor signed the ‘sweeping changes’ bill that legalizes the recreational use of weed, alongside its sale and growing too. In addition, the law was reportedly issued just moments after the governor signed the measure for the law on Wednesday during the morning hours.
Meanwhile, clear-cut guidance in the memo states that cops must be aware that all those who are 21 and above are free to smoke weed at almost any location where cigarette smoking is allowed. This entails sidewalks, public spots, and front stoops as well.
