Brooker, who lives in Adelaide, South Australia, was granted bail on Wednesday, 9th September by the Christies Beach Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Rodney Oates granted bail because of Brooker’s lack of criminal history. The bail amount was set at $10,000, and Brooker was allowed home detention at his grandmother’s place.

In defense of his decision, Oates claimed, “I do take into account the fact other charges are being investigated but, in relation to this bail application, I must focus on the charges that are before this court.”

However, police prosecutors are moving to the Supreme Court to appeal the decision.

Brooker contacted all of his victims on social media, primarily on Skype and Telegram. Out of the 19 he contacted, he had sexual intercourse with two male high school students. One of these two has since committed suicide. The other is undergoing testing for HIV.

According to local police prosecutors, Brooker had hundreds of sexual exploitation material on his social media. While in jail, he allegedly asked his mother to erase the evidence from his social media accounts. She only succeeded partially before being caught. Within the material, prosecutors found Brooker expressing his intention ‘to infect’ children ‘with AIDs’.

Consequently, he is being charged on four counts. Firstly, for repeatedly pursuing and exploiting underage teenagers. Secondly, having an ongoing sexual relationship with two underage boys.

His third and fourth crimes are attempting to disseminate evidence and possessing child exploitation content. He has yet to plead in front of the court. His court dates are scheduled for later this year.

His offenses date from December 2015 to August of this year. Currently, he is at his grandmother’s home in Glenelg East. He is under 24-hour surveillance via an ankle monitor. Moreover, he is forbidden from accessing the internet.

However, local police are expressing their skepticism that Brookers will manage to stay offline. One officer reported, “in this day and age, it’s almost impossible to prevent someone accessing the internet.”
