Police Shot Boy With Autism After His Mom Called For Help

The Salt Lake City Police Department vowed to cooperate with multiple investigations when officers shot a 13-year-old boy suffering from Autism.

The boy’s mother, Golda Barton, called and asked for a crisis intervention team Friday night as he was having a mental breakdown and needed to be transported to the hospital for treatment.

“This is how to deal with people with mental health issues. So, you call them, and they’re supposed to come out and be able to deescalate a situation using the most minimal force possible,” Barton explained.

She explained to the police that her son, Linden Cameron, was “unarmed, he doesn’t have anything, he just gets mad and he starts yelling and screaming. He’s a kid he’s trying to get attention, he doesn’t know how to regulate.”

In less than five minutes after the officers arrived at the scene, she heard “get down on the ground” and several gunshots.

A witness claimed that one of the officers grabbed his own head in disbelief and said out loud, “He’s just a child, what are you doing?”

Police that they were called to the area for a report of a “”violent psych issue” involving the juvenile “having a mental episode” and “making threats to some folks with a weapon.”

The authorities did not confirm whether a weapon was located, but the Salt Lake Tribune reported that no weapon was found in the scene.

On Tuesday, the Salt Lake City Police Department released a statement explaining that “a protocol team made up of officers from multiple agencies with no ties to the Salt Lake City Police Department conducts an independent investigation” each time there is an shooting incident involving an officer.

“We are cooperating fully with the protocol team assigned to this case,” the department added, and said that the city’s “Civilian Review Board and our own Internal Affairs will also conduct parallel separate investigations.”
