During a hearing at Lewes Crown Court, Roe said that his ex-girlfriend, 22-year-old Tiffany Tate, was the last person who held their child.

When accused for the murder, Roe claims he was too embarrassed to tell the police that he usually smoked three joints every night and that he went to his shed, where he kept his stash of sex toys.

Roe initially admitted to have tripped and fell on top of his baby after taking tramadol and smoking cannabis – an hour before calling paramedics, but later admitted to have lied under oath.

“It was your turn to give evidence on oath,” asked Danny Robinson QC, representing Tate.

“And I lied under oath,” said Roe.

“Do you know it’s a criminal offence,” Robinson asked.

“I know and I understand,” Roe replied.

He claims to have stuck to the story on the advice of his legal team.

“I was following the advice from my legal team and the lying statement they made me sign,” Roe testified.

Holly, who came home from a premature baby unit, was found to have suffered from two brain injuries and broken ribs in 12 places.

Professor Safa Al-Sarraj, a consultant neuropathologist for King’s College Hospital, said that there was no other explanation for how the baby could have come by her fatal injuries.

“The brain has violent forward and backward movement consistent with violent accelerations and decelerations,” the doctor said.

“These are more likely to be abusive brain injury.”

When asked whether the injuries can be caused by something else, Prof Al-Sarraj said: “No other explanation.”
