The Little Mermaid Statue In Copenhagen Vandalized For Being The ‘Racist Fish’


Copenhagen’s most famous monument ‘The Little Mermaid’ statue has been vandalized by an anonymous person.

On Friday, July 3, the police and the public were left puzzled to see one of the famous monuments of their city vandalized and were unaware of the reason or message behind it. 

While giving a statement, the Copenhagen police announced that the statue of the Little Mermaid had been vandalized before 9:00 a.m on Friday morning, however, there were no clues about the suspect.

“An unknown person has written the words ‘Racist Fish’ on it. We are investigating the case”, stated the police. The stickers were attached to the famous mermaid statue after someone spray-painted ‘racist fish’ on the rock that serves as its base.

The statue of the Little Mermaid weighs 175 kg that was made by famous sculptor Edvard Eriksen and is associated with the character in Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale that had the same name.

Over the past years, numerous incidents of vandalizing the statue were reported that also included the events when an arm was cut off from the statue in 1984, as well as when someone stole mermaid’s head in 1964 and 1998.

Vandalism in various countries is often associated with some political message, in fact, someone painted “Free Hong Kong” on the very same rock, in January. But this time the racist accusation has left people baffled.

The statues of historical figures in many countries have been set on fire by protestors and activists who were opposing racism amid incident of an African-American George Floyd’s death, who was killed by a white police officer on May 25 in Minneapolis.

Other statues around Copenhagen have been vandalized with ‘various phrases’ including the political as well as racist comments as stated by the police. Moreover, police disclosed that someone wrote ‘racist’ on the statue of Danish King Christian IV on June 16.
