3 million copies in just 24 hours, as well as breaking global streaming records on Apple Music and Spotify.

While Republic Records released the news on its album sales, Spotify announced that the album broke the record for first-day album streams by a female artist with 80.6 million streams.

That number surpasses Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next, which garnered 70.2 million streams in 2019, as the biggest album debut for a female artist in Spotify history.

Folklore also surpassed Juice WRLD’s Legends Never Die as the biggest streaming debut of 2020.

Swift described her album as an “entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears and musings into…”

“I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect time,’ but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed,” she added.

Her eighth album Folklore was made from scratch in the quarantine era, recorded at her home in Los Angeles, and written and produced in remote collaboration largely with Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff.

“My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with,” Swift said.

The Grammy Award winning singer / songwriter had been facing negativity in the recent years, but her recent work reminded fans and critics that her music and songwriting skills is what they should be paying attention to.

The new album is Swift’s first attempt away from pop, as it is what the New York Times call rough-edged, downtrodden and spacey.
