Texas Hostage Situation Ends Peacefully

A hostage situation in a home near Austin, Texas ended peacefully on Monday morning when a man and his mother were released.

Cedar Park Police announced that the man and his mother “had come out of the house peacefully” at around 9 a.m.

A day earlier a 911 call was made to report a domestic disturbance, wherein three police officers who responded were shot.

Hours after the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself and held three people hostage inside a home in Cedar Park.

Two of the hostages, the suspect’s brother and sister, and a family pet were released an hour before the suspect surrendered with his mother.

The suspect, a man in his mid-20s whose name was not immediately released, called the police after he kicked down the door of his mother’s house and was “acting very aggressive.”

Interim Police Chief Mike Harmon said that the negotiations were “delicate”, yet they remained hopeful that the suspect would peacefully surrender.

“Our negotiations team has been doing an outstanding job throughout the night,” said Harmon.

He also said that the suspect was suffering from “some mental health issues,” but declined to provide more details.

The Cedar Park Police Department was said to have a history with the residence, including when officers last visited the home.

The three officers who were shot, whose names were undisclosed, were rushed to an area hospital and does not have any life-threatening injuries and are now in stable condition.

“Our hearts are with the police officers who were injured while protecting the Cedar Park community this afternoon,” said Governor Greg Abbott in a statement.
