Thousand Leave Miami Cruise Ship Unscreened Despite Former Passenger Tested Positive For Coronavirus


A cruise ship in Miami allowed thousand of people to leave without undergoing medical screening on Sunday, despite having a former passenger who tested positive for COVID-19.

The said passenger disembarked MSC Meraviglia days earlier in Miami, leaving 103 passengers and the ship’s crew for the next voyage.

After four days, the Public Health Agency of Canada informed MSC Cruises that the former passenger tested positive for the deadly virus.

MSC Meraviglia had already sailed with thousands of additional new passengers when they received the message from the health agency.

According to the company, they isolated seven crewmembers in individual cabins – those who were in close contact with the said passenger.

The ship is supposed to be held at the Florida coast to conduct COVID-19 testing on people on board, but MSC said U.S. health authorities cleared it to dock and disembark passengers as normal.

No one was tested for COVID-19, and the passengers – 3,877 of them, freely disembarked at Port Miami on Sunday.

MSC Cruises spokesperson Alyssa Goldfarb said via email, “MSC Meraviglia received clearance after health authorities reviewed all the necessary documentation regarding the health of passengers and crew on board today and throughout the cruise.”

They claim that no one on board showed symptoms of the virus.

Most of them went straight to Miami International Airport and head home.

This incident is the exact opposite of what happened in California, where a former passenger of the Grand Princess Cruise ship tested positive for the virus.

A passenger from South Carolina said he received a letter from MSC, advising him about the former passenger who had tested positive.

“If we have it, it’s going to spread throughout the country,” he said.

“When I say there was no check, there was none whatsoever. I expected us to have some kind of a screening. They didn’t do a single thing. We walked straight off the ship. There wasn’t any check on anyone for anything.”

He advised that his will try to get tested for COVID-19 in South Carolina as soon as possible.
