Vanessa Bryant requested the judge to dismiss the lawsuit filed against her by her own mother, Sofia Laine.

In December, Laine sued Kobe’s estate and claims that the basketball star verbally promised to take care of her financially for the rest of her life.

Laine argued that she deserves to receive $5 million in back pay after serving as a “longtime personal assistant” to Vanessa and a nanny for the grandchildren.

Vanessa’s mother also claimed that the couple violated several California labor laws when she was not given her meal breaks, rest periods, and minimum wage for babysitting services.

In her newest filing, Vanessa’s legal team zeroes in on Laine’s statements and her legal fight she was having against her ex-husband in 2004 and 2008 over spousal support.

During the said legal battle, Laine’s ex-husband claimed he does not need to pay for spousal support because his daughter, Vanessa, and her husband support Laine with his wealth.

He also pointed out to reports claiming that Vanessa bought her a $1 million home, proving that Laine does not need any form of financial support from him.

Laine, however, fired back at her ex, stating that her daughter and son-in-law are under no obligation to provide financial support to her.

“I would never permit Vanessa to do such a thing. I have not and do not (nor should I be required to) rely on Vanessa for my support,” Laine said at the time.

Vanessa’s legal team also pointed out that the verbal promise the late basketball star made is too vague to be enforced.

Lastly, Vanessa’s legal team argues that Laine was never an employee.

“[Sofia] was never an ’employee’ … [she] is a grandmother who, at times, helped her daughter and son-in-law by spending time with her grandchildren.”
