Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized on Thursday that marriage is only a heterosexual union and he promoted the idea of cherishing the thought in the constitutional amendment.

“A marriage is a union of a man and a woman,” he said during a meeting with a committee named by the Kremlin discussing new changes to the Russian constitution. “This is the right approach and it should be endorsed,” he said after conservative lawmaker Olga Batalina, adding that Russia’s constitution would maintain “traditional family values.”

She reported that attempts to introduce new terms like ‘ parent number one ‘ and ‘ parent number two ‘ are badly affecting and disturbing the families.

Batalina who is a senior law maker in the united Russia party who is in majority as well, said in the Federal assembly that “This is not fantasy, this is reality in some countries”.

It should be noted that she was the one who opposed Russia’s ban of international adoption and the ‘ gay propaganda ‘ legislation that de-facto banned LGBT activism.

Putin supported the idea by saying that “As long as I’m president, we won’t have (parent number one and two). We will have dad and mom”.

Putin announced last month that Russia required constitutional changes drafted in 1993, and named a group of hundreds of legislators and celebrities to come up with some ideas.

At today’s televised conference, representatives recommended that phrases about Russia being a ‘ peace-making society ‘ for humanity and a nation that was triumphant in World War II, among a vast array of other proposals, be incorporated into the constitution.

Several questions were raised over this traditional constitutional amendment as why Putin wants an overhaul in the country’s balance of power, although the Russian leader, whose presidency expires in 2024, claimed the reforms are not intended to extend his own powers.

One member of the committee, Yelena Isinbayeva, who holds the world record in the pole vault, revealed that she would not have read the constitution until Putin invited her to participate.

She said, “Thank  you for giving me this novel opportunity, before there was no need I finally read the Constitution. Now I understand as how important this book is”.

Since 2012, Putin’s latest tenure in the Kremlin has witnessed a crucial shift towards more conservative policies, with organisations supporting orthodox Orthodox Christian values gaining more credibility and moderate voices were threatened.
