A 19-year-old Muslim student is voicing her anger after one of Starbucks Baristas’ labeled her coffee cup with ‘ISIS.
The hijab-wearing Muslim teenager, who only revealed her first name as Aishah, said that she ordered a coffee drink at a Starbucks outlet, present inside Target. The branch, situated in St. Paul Minnesota, wasn’t something new for her but the shocking incident left her speechless.
The 19-year-old student says she was appalled when she witnessed the shocking label written across her order. Furthermore, she described how she was clad in a hijab, when placing the order and how she had to continually repeat her name, on multiple instances.
Similarly, the enraged Muslim student was shocked to the core when her beverage arrived. It had a giant ‘ISIS’ label printed across the cup, which stands for The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Above all, the label represents the renowned terrorist organization that is associated with groups comprising of radicalized individuals, claiming to be of the Muslim faith.
A rather shaken Aishah described the incident further in a public press conference as:
‘When I first received the drink I was in shock that in this day and age something like this could be written.’
The enraged college student was accompanied by her civil rights attorney, who slammed the incident as being Islamaphobic. She went on to describe how she felt severely belittled, enraged, and humiliated by the entire ordeal.
Aishah further went on describing how she requested to speak with the Starbucks manager, but it was in vain. The entire incident ended with the manager terming it as a ‘mistake,’ while defending the barista for his actions.
Jaylani Hussein, who is the executive director of the Minnesota Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, stated that the manager had the nerve to tell Aishah:
‘What’s the issue? People get their names wrong all the time.’
The international-based coffee franchise gave the Muslim student a brand new drink while adding a gift card worth $25 before she exited the store.
Responding to the entire incident, Target issued it’s a statement regarding the horrifying ordeal, claiming that Starbucks barista misheard the name. This included the following apologetic statement made by the organization:
‘We have investigated the matter and believe that it was not a deliberate act but an unfortunate mistake that could have been avoided with more clarification. We are taking appropriate actions with the team member, including additional training to ensure this does not occur again,’
Another report by CAIR explained how the Target store claims that the Barista involved ‘has never heard of ISIS.’
Nevertheless, Hussein says that CAIR is adamant about filing discriminatory charges with the US Department of Human Rights, over the shocking incident.
