Vice President Kamala Harris is all set to hold a scheduled virtual meeting with Mexico’s President Lopez Obrador on the 7th of May, confirmed sources in Mexico.
This is reported to be the first time in over 31 days that the vice president will take some sort of measures to help solve the ever-increasing migrant entry into the US. Despite being the border czar, Kamala Harris has failed to visit the border facilities nor has she held any form of press conference related to the issue.
Therefore, this is termed to be significant as it is her first intervention on the matter.
Both leaders are expected to hold a conversation about migration issues right after a massive surge in underage migrants took center stage on the border. Moreover, Mexican sources confirmed how the meeting is bound to focus upon the country’s tree-planting initiative.
Mexico’s president mentioned in the past how it can assist with the massive surge by paying farmers to plant trees instead of migrating and leaving their native land behind. Therefore, the nation had put up the initiative to the US for the providence of funds so as to help expand that program towards both Honduras as well as Guatemala.
But now, it appears that officials are scrambling to get a hold of the situation as the numbers seem to be increasing by the second. As each day goes by, new figures and estimates show a dramatic increase in the number of children who cross the border of the US and Mexico alone.
In the month of March, there were about 172,000 encounters alone, with a historic spike in the number of unaccompanied children.
Therefore, Kamala Harris has mentioned how she hopes the virtual meeting on Zoom will help focus upon the common goals of prosperity as well as good governance while addressing the root causes that relate to migration.
